Statement: Dunnes store closure

The closure of Dunnes store in Heywood is a sad blow for the local economy and the town centre.

The now-vacant site is privately owned, so ultimately the future use of the building is in the hands of the landlord. However, I have written to Rochdale Council to ask if the Council is aware of the landlord’s plans for the space and if the Council has played – or can play – any part in securing its future.

It will do Heywood no good whatsoever for the property to sit vacant for any length of time, and I hope that it will be put to good use as soon as possible.
