Labour needs to learn the lessons of our defeat, and reconnect with the people of Britain. That's why I'm backing Andy Burnham for leader.
Andy understands that to win in 2020, Labour cannot choose to speak to just one group of voters or another. We need a leader able to speak to those who voted Conservative or UKIP in England, and the thousands who voted for the SNP in Scotland.
I believe Andy is the candidate to do that.
Andy's track record in government and in opposition has shown that competence and compassion can go hand in hand. He would be a leader people can relate to, and a leader who genuinely understands people's problems.
His vision for Labour is that we are a Party who helps everyone get on in life, whoever they are and wherever they come from. I believe that is what people in Heywood and Middleton and across the country want, and I believe Andy would be the leader able to make it happen.
That's why I'm backing Andy Burnham for leader, and why I urge all Labour members and supporters to do the same.
