What influenced you to stand as a Parliamentary Candidate for Heywood and Middleton?
I was a great admirer of the late Jim Dobbin who was the MP here for many years until he sadly passed away last year. I met him many times in my role at the NHS and he was always helpful, knowledgeable and really committed to having the best healthcare possible. I was shocked and saddened by his death and it wasn’t an easy decision to make to follow in his footsteps but I decided that I wanted to carry on the great campaigning work the he was doing on the NHS and on employment.
What should the residents of Heywood and Middleton know about you?
I was born and bred in neighbouring Oldham, and I lived in Middleton for 11 years. I have spent most of my working life in the hospitals serving the population of Heywood and Middleton. I worked in the NHS for 33 years, and was a councillor in neighbouring Rossendale before being chosen by Labour members here in Heywood and Middleton as their parliamentary candidate.
I believe passionately in the founding principles of our NHS - free to all at the point of need and will continue to fight against David Cameron’s privatisation of our treasured institution. Now the Conservatives have a majority government the fight is going to be even tougher, but I'm more determined than ever. I am a hard worker with a proven track record of work in the NHS and local government. Being elected in October 2014 and again at the general election in May 2015 was a huge honour and very humbling. I take the responsibility of representing our local area extremely seriously and people in Heywood and Middleton can be assured that I will work tirelessly to get a fair deal for all.
